This route system incorporates more depth to the original gameplay by incorporating a common trait used within modern games whereby you can find your own way to a desired ending. There are four separate routes that you can take at the beginning of the game and these paths split later on giving you more choice – the routes vary in difficulty and they take you through old and new levels. Fans will immediately recognise remixed tracks such as “Go Straight” from the first stage of SoR2 which gives the game the polished feel it deserves and it maintains what fans loved about the music. These games were a powerful audiovisual experience and managed to create some hard-hitting music to appropriately match the environments, situations and its brawler game style. Not only are the controls familiar, but the soundtrack for the previous games always had a groovy, techno vibe that takes influences from music artists of the time (check out this great video comparing the music!) and Remake has continued this by remastering the original tracks and composing some new ones. You will still feel like you’re playing the original Streets of Rage games as it doesn’t stray from the old controls and instead embraces all of the moves and special attacks that were used throughout the trilogy, giving you an assortment of ways to eliminate your opponents. It didn’t appear that they were rooting to design a completely new game and with over 100 stages, 19 playable characters and the majority of old tracks remixed, it shows that there is nothing lazy about this revamp. Having said that Remake is an improvement, this is not to say that the trilogy was flawed in any particular way – Bombergames merely expanded the possibilities of an old game using what gameplay features are offered in gaming today. This article will be exploring how the improvements make this fan-made version the ultimate Streets of Rage venture.

With 8 years in in the making and created entirely from scratch by Spanish development group Bombergames, Remake shows how they have vastly enhanced the gameplay without changing the fundamentals by adding more levels and characters, introducing features which expand the replay value and allowing major customisability in options giving you the freedom to play how you want to play. A tribute to a brilliant side-scrolling beat-em-up, Streets of Rage Remake is a reincarnation of the classic Genesis series, Streets of Rage (1991 – 1994), combining all three games and including plenty of extra content to generate an all-in-one extended experience.
